The history of online roulette is quite short, but it has been involved with casinos and gambling houses for a long time. We would like to give you some facts about history of roulette.
The word “roulette” itself derives from French and means “a small wheel”. The origins of the game are not clear, but some theories exist.
According to one of them, roulette was invented by Pascal, philosopher and mathematician from France, in the 17th century. The invention was made in an attempt to create a perpetuum moblie. But the idea to use the invention for gambling must belong to someone else.
The ancestor of our modern roulette is hoka, a gambling game played in France in the 18 century. It was much more primitive than modern roulette, but in general it was the same: it was a wheel with numerated sectors and a ball. Hoka was very profitable, as it not only had 40 sectors, but three of them were zeros.
Another variation of roulette is Odd orEven game, which was popular in England in the 18th century. The wheel had 40 sectors, each marked Odd or Even.
A similar game – plop – was popular in many casinos in Europe in the 18th century. The wheel had 18 sectors numbered from 1 to 9. But the wheel itself was motionless. The players could bet on any sector including zero or they could bet on odd/even numbers.
The roulette wheel as we know it was first introduced in Paris in 1765. Soon it had become very popular. But the French government banned all the gambling games in 1798. Roulette moved to Germany, but as soon as it has gained popularity there, gambling became prohibited in Germany too. Roulette had to move again, this time to Monaco. It was the right choice. Soon gambling was banned in all European countries and Monaco became the capital of gambling world.
Roulette was introduced in the United States in the XIX century by French immigrants. Here roulette had similar history, as it had in Europe – it was banned several times. Americans made some changes to a roulette wheel though. American roulette has two green cells instead of one: 0 and 00.
But even with those strict prohibitions, roulette survived, and nowadays it has millions of fans all over the world and is rightfully considered a symbol of any casino and a symbol of gambling on the whole.
